Stay Safe This Summer: Preparing Your Home for Inclement Weather

John Doss • July 6, 2025

Summer in North Carolina often means sunny days and warm evenings, but it can also bring sudden, powerful thunderstorms. These storms can pop up quickly and sometimes come with strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, and even hail. Preparing your home ahead of time helps keep you, your family, and your belongings safe—while also protecting the property.

Here’s how you can get ready for whatever the summer skies bring.

Secure Your Outdoor Space

Before a storm hits, take a look around your yard, porch, or patio. Loose items like patio furniture, grills, toys, and garden tools can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Bring smaller items inside and secure anything that’s too heavy to move. If you have hanging baskets or decorations, take them down or make sure they’re well anchored.

Protect Your Electronics

Lightning strikes and power surges are common during thunderstorms. To avoid damage, plug your most valuable electronics—like computers, TVs, and gaming systems—into surge protectors. If a severe storm is forecast, consider unplugging devices altogether until the storm passes.

Check Your Gutters & Drains

Summer storms can dump a lot of rain in a short time. Clean gutters and downspouts help direct water away from your home and prevent leaks or flooding. Make sure your drains and splash blocks are clear so water can flow freely. If you notice any pooling water or drainage issues, let us know right away.

Prepare for Power Outages

Thunderstorms can knock out power, sometimes for several hours. Keep flashlights and extra batteries in an easy-to-find spot. Charge your phone and other essential devices ahead of time. It’s also a good idea to have some bottled water and non-perishable snacks on hand, just in case.

Stay Informed

Weather can change fast in the summer. Download a reliable weather app and enable alerts, or keep a battery-powered radio handy. Pay attention to severe thunderstorm watches and warnings so you have time to prepare.

Safety First

During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from windows. Avoid using corded phones and don’t take showers or baths, as lightning can travel through plumbing. If you’re driving when a storm hits, pull over safely and wait for the worst to pass.

Know Who to Call

If you experience storm damage—like leaks, broken windows, or downed tree limbs—contact us as soon as it’s safe. Prompt reporting helps us address issues quickly and keep your home in good shape.

Pet-friendly rentals attract more applicants, boost occupancy rates, and foster longer tenancies—especially among working professionals and families. However, opening your doors to pets also introduces risks like property damage, noise, and liability concerns. The key is to craft a smart, balanced pet policy that protects your investment while welcoming responsible pet owners.
